Former Super Eagles' defence trojan, Taribo West has lost his mother. Wakaji Batubo West who passed away on Monday at the former AC Milan defender's home in Lagos, South-West Nigeria was aged 90. Taribo, who is the presiding pastor of Shelter in the Storm Ministries spoke to brilafm on the unforgettable memories of his late mother: "She was a very disciplined woman, loving and I personally would miss her". Taribo who is the 8th of 9 children noted that the family would celebrate the good memory of Wakaji Batubo in Lagos and further burial rites would be announced by the family when they meet in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.

Soldiers open fire on Commercial bus

Nigerian Soldiers in Katsina State on Thursday opened fire on a commercial vehicle with reg. number AY504KTN, killing one of the passengers, a student of the Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic in the city. Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, the JTF spokesman in the state, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina. Iweha said that the soldiers opened fire on the vehicle when the driver attempted to beat a military checkpoint at Batagarawa area of the state. Iweha confirmed said that one of the passengers in the vehicle was hit and that he died instantly. The JTF spokesman said that the affected driver had been arrested while the vehicle had been impounded by the army. Iweha said that investigation into the incident has also commenced. Meanwhile, a witness, who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen that the driver allegedly attempted to overtake a truck at the checkpoint. The witness said that the deceased was later identified as Umar Ali, 22, a National Diploma II student of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Katsina. According to the witness, the deceased was travelling along with his friends to Minna, Niger, for a wedding ceremony when the incident occurred.

On Christmas Eve, Kim Kardashian and her little sis, Kendall Jenner Paid a visit to The Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles to see kids there.

6 suspected members of the Blue Angel cult have allegedly gang ráped a 16-year-old secondary school student in Akure, Ondo State capital. As 24-year-old school dropout, Yusuf Lawal, was yesterday remanded in Kirikiri Prison custody by a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, for allegedly being in possession of a gun, which was later discovered to be a toy gun. It was discovered that the suspects had recorded the evil act on a mobile phone, while taking their turns on the girl. Furthermore, they threatened to upload it on the Internet if she dares to report them to her parents or the Police. However, two of the alleged rapists have been arrested by officials of the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC. Four other suspects are on the run. According to the victim, the 6 boys blindfolded her and threatened to rip her open with knife if she failed to cooperate. Those arrested include Banjo Olasehinde, 25, A.K.A. Obanje Babalowo Sherry and Adewale Fadunsi, 28, a fashion designer. The ones wanted by the police are Tope Oluwole; Tope, A.K.A Jigan and Muyideen, a.k.a. Gbem. Spokesman of NSCDC in the state, Kayode Balogun, said one of the suspects, Banjo Olasehinde, has confessed to the crime and the fact that they belong to a cult group known as Blue Angel. The defendant, who is standing trial before Justice Kudirat Jose, is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, robbery and unlawful possession of firearms, preferred against him.

The residents of Panseke, in the capital city of Ogun State, Abeokuta, are forced to take water for their domestic use from a broken pipe in a drainage channel.

The residents also complained to Saharareporters on the lack of potable water in the vicinity, stating that majority of them source of water from traditional wells, which have dried up since last year. However, they said respite came their way recently from a broken pipe leaking in the gutter which appears cleaner and manageable. Some students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), who reside in Oluwo area of the community, disclosed that they are also faced with water crisis and only manage what they scoop from their wells, which are now drying up due to the dry season.

Just in time for Christmas, a team of scientists in China were able to create ten little piglets that glow green under black fluorescent lights, thanks to a technique developed by the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Medicine. A group of scientists from South China Agricultural University were able to do this by injecting fluorescent protein from jellyfish DNA into pig embryos, thus creating the green-glowing pigs. This same technique was used to create the world’s first glow-in-the-dark bunnies in Turkey earlier this year, where they are currently working to produce similar results with fluorescent-glowing sheep. Scientists, however, are not creating glowing farm animals for seasonal décor. The goal of the research is to have an efficient and cheap way of getting a beneficial gene into humans that could help treat many genetic disorders. Dr. Stefan Moisyadi, a UH Manoa bioscientist with the Institute for Biological Research, says, for example, that this technique could benefit people who suffer with the rare blood-clotting disease hemophilia. “We can make [blood-clotting] enzymes a lot cheaper in animals rather than a factory that will cost millions of dollars to build,” Moisyadi said in a press release. According to Moisyadi, the now-green piglets have not been affected by the fluorescent protein and are expected to have the same life span as other pigs. “The green is only a marker to show that it’s working easily,” he said. In the video below, the scientists in southern China show off their result by turning off the lights and shining a black light over the piglets. They are placed in a container to limit their movement.

A man who punched his girlfriend in the face, fracturing her skull in three places, has been jailed for a maximum six months for misdemeanour assault. Pacer Anthony Ferguson was also ordered by Yellowstone County District Court judge G Todd Baugh to write “boys do not hit girls” 5000 times. Ferguson, of Billings, Montana, has to number the list, sign it and mail it to the district court judge by May 23, the Billings Gazette reported. He was also ordered to pay $3,800 towards his girlfriend’s medical bills. Ferguson admitted in court that he punched his girlfriend in the face during an argument on August 24, 2012. His girlfriend, who had to have a permanent mesh titanium plate inserted, gave evidence during the four-day trial stating that she suffered from double vision when she looks up or down and has occasional numbness and pain in her face. The jury convicted Ferguson of the misdemeanour assault charge. He was acquitted of more serious charges of felony aggravated assault and felony witness tampering. Ferguson though had to appear was next before District Judge Gregory R. Todd for a disposition hearing on a sentence for a felony attempted robbery – he attempted to rob a man with a knife – in 2003. “As you know, we’ve seen each other over the course of many years – from the start of my judgeship,” Todd told Ferguson, adding that he is going into his 14th year as a judge. He ruled that Ferguson violated the terms of his release for the 2003 robbery multiple times, including the misdemeanour assault, and ordered him to spend eight years in Montana State Prison. The sentence will run concurrent to Ferguson’s sentence for the misdemeanour assault. Chief Deputy Yellowstone County attorney Juli M. Pierce said after the hearing that she respected the two sentences the judges gave Ferguson. “We’ll continue to prosecute domestic violence cases no matter what the outcome is,” she said, shortly after Ferguson was taken into custody. “We’ll continue to fight that fight because that’s why we’re here – for the protection of the community.”

A fast food waitress from suburban Chicago has been charged with s*xual assault on a man, who told police that the 25-year-old had forced him to have s*x with her friend in the backseat of a car after offering him a ridee Cierra Ross, a mother of two from Olympia Fields, was arrested Tuesday for her part in the alleged r*pe of a 33-year-old man. According to police, the victim was walking in the 400 block of North Kingsbury when Miss Ross pulled up next op him and offered him a lift home. A short time later, the Denny’s waitress allegedly pulled a revolver on him, ordering him to climb into the backseat and take off his clothes. Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Amanda Pillsbury told The Chicago Sun-Times that Ross then forced the 33-year-old at gunpoint to have s*x with her friend. In the course of the encounter, the man was allegedly instructed to fondle the woman’s br**sts and buttocks. The two female suspects also allegedly robbed their victim, getting away with $200 in cash, credit cards and an iPhone. The unnamed man reportedly begged his assailants to stop, but was eventually able to escape from the car, running down the street unclad from the waist down. The 33-year-old spotted a taxi nearby and asked for the driver’s help. The Good Samaritan agreed to let him use his cell phone to snap a picture of Ross’ license plate and email it to himself. The alleged victim later contacted police and identified Ross from a lineup. Her friend was not charged in connection to the r*pe. Miss Ross, who also goes by the alias Octavia Brown, is being held on $75,000 bail. Her criminal record includes a number of misdemeanor prostitution charges.

In December 1, the world celebrated World AIDS Day, a global victory in the fight to end the end the bias on men, women and children living with HIV — and more than two weeks later, the world may be gearing up to celebrate something even bigger. A new study published in PLOS ONE by the North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design, in conjunction with the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, found that a 20-year-old HIV-positive adult on antiretroviral therapy (known as ART) is expected to live into their early 70s. Longer Lives The groundbreaking results prove that living with a positive diagnosis may no longer be a walking death sentence: HIV-positive adults are getting closer and closer to having a life expectancy that echoes the general US population. Researchers reviewed data from nearly 23,000 individuals receiving ART (a mix of three different drugs that suppress and stop the progression of HIV — but with damning side effects) over the age of 20. They noted that the change in life expectancy differed depending on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics (like drug use and immune cell counts), and they found that over the years, people living with HIV have been living longer. HIV-positive adults are living almost 20 years longer today than they were in 2000. The study showed that between 2000 and 2002, HIV-positive adults at 20 only had a life expectancy of 36.1 and in 2006 and 2007; they had a life expectancy of nearly 51.4 years. And the reason? Research points to ART; the three-punch packed treatment has helped HIV-positive adults enjoy a longer life, though the side effects of the pill are, in most cases, unpleasant. The Next Stage Of Research Though the current research proves promising for HIV-infected individuals, it’s really the next phase of research that has heads turning. A small group of scientists based in New York believe that treating HIV patients with radiation (from a radioactive smart bomb) will be more effective — and the results don’t lie. Just last week, researchers announced that a select group of patients “blasted” by radiation (as well as antiviral drugs) had made the HIV virus undetectable in the body. Led by Dr. Ekaterina Dadachova, researchers found that radioimmunotherapy kills white blood cells infected with the disease. They also found that the radioactive antibodies showed the ability to kill more HIV-infected cells in the brain while doing less damage to the brain. And while the future for so many HIV-positive adults remains up in the air, the course of the research should stand as a testament to the major steps forward that the scientific community — and the world — has taken to stand by and help.
